Tarot: Divining the Past, Present & Future of Fashion

April 13, 2024 | A TITLE Issue 008 Project

Cycles of fashion have been around for as long as modern clothing machinery has been able to produce them. As time progresses, these cycles become tighter and tighter. Social media has only perpetuated this phenomenon, and with the Y2K era in full swing, it is likely that the 2010s are next up on the list. Divining through tarot cards allows possible futures to reveal themselves using pieces of the past to push forward. By cycling back through time and revisiting popular garb of another era, people are more likely to understand their place in the present and maybe even catch a glimpse of their (tarot-card-driven) future.

THE DEVIL

Revisiting bloomers that first originated in the late 1800s, The Devil strips down to reveal what was once meant to be covered. Wearing lingerie as an outfit has garnered immense popularity recently, breaking away from the restrictive and provocative connotation that has followed these garments. In an act of self-absorption, she engages in a handful of the seven deadly sins … serving nonetheless.

DEATH

Nightlife is where Death flourishes, lurking around the scene enjoying everyone’s unknowingly fleeting hedonism. Club Kid attire emerged in the 1990s as the shiny, bumping rave culture grew hand-in-hand.
Don’t leave the house without flashy garments, chunky shoes, and of course sunglasses (anonymity is hot). Only here for one more night if Death has their way … make it sexy!

THE HERMIT

This Hermit’s shell is worth collecting! Surrounded by her favorite angsty comforts, the punk aesthetic has a real chance to shine through. Another look influenced by 1990s subculture, plaid skirts and layered tees offer the perfect peep into The Hermit’s (objectively superior) taste in the arts. Don’t even think about asking for a hit of her bong if you’re not going to ask about the backstory of her ripped tights.

THE LOVERS

Power couples wear power shoulders! The 1980s meant shiny, gaudy, over-the-top silhouettes, perfect for these extravagant prom queens. Pairing with even more flashy accessories and makeup brings the looks closer to the present, where maximalism craves to bring together all the seemingly dissonant aesthetics. The Lovers are here to keep matchmaking styles … who will they bring together next?

THE FOOL

In a noir nod to 1920s clown costumes, The Fool wears a more sophisticated uniform. Circus tents draw the curtains aside revealing a ruffled collar that reminds people of the entertainer’s real occupation. Modern takes on traditionally humorous styles are no mystery to The Fool, though it takes a lot more to make her laugh recently. Pass the popcorn!

THE STAR

With the spotlight set firmly on her, The Star makes sure to pull out all the stops for a perfect glam shot. Her billowing 1970s-esque hair, 90s slip skirt, 20s pearls and soft 80s blue jacket reflect today’s casual merging of decades of fashion. Stay on her good side and maybe she’ll let you borrow those gold hoops you’ve been eyeing (they were her least favorite anyways).
